Handbuilding with Clay Slabs: May 21st Tuesday 6:30-8:30pm

$85.00

Come explore one of the methods of handbuilding with clay slabs!

This month you can try out slab building before you commit to one of our 4-Week workshops. Join our clay instructor, Amelia, on Tuesday, May 21st from 6:30-8:30pm for a 2-hour workshop where you will learn how to transform a slab of clay into your very own work of art.

What You'll Learn:

  • Slab Preparation and Cutting Techniques: Starting with a brief introduction to the properties of clay, Amelia will guide you through using templates and drafting tools for precise cutting. She’ll also share techniques for cutting clay at an angle to ensure smooth joins. This session also encourages you to unleash your creativity by cutting out your own freehand designs if you choose.

  • Assembly and Decoration: Learn the 'score and slip' method in pottery, which is essential for securely joining clay parts. This technique ensures your creations are both beautiful and sturdy. You will also explore various decorating and carving techniques to add personal flair to your work, from textural details to intricate carvings. Amelia will also show you how to smooth out rough edges, preparing your piece for firing.

Once your creations are complete we will handle all of the bisque and glaze firings, including hand glazing each piece for you. In 3 weeks you’ll pick up your finished pieces at Studio Sumi.

Supplies needed: None! All tools and clay will be provided for you including an apron.

Amelia Waliany is an artist and community organizer based in San Francisco, with a creative lineage from New York City and Houston, Texas. A lifelong doodler-with-pen, she was thrilled in 2014 to discover clay as a new artistic medium, energized by the playfulness inherent in the spatial, physical, and tactile aspects of the material. Deeply resonating with the therapeutic, meditative flow-state that is brought on by the process of making with one’s hands, Amelia has since honed her ceramics practice in several studio settings and collectives, along the way absorbing a wide variety of techniques, materials, and themes alongside a vibrant global community of inspiring makers. A people-person to her core, Amelia loves sharing her passion for clay to help others find their creative spark.
