4-Week Intro to Handbuilding- Sept. Session

$249.00

Spring into Pottery: A 4-Week Handbuilding Experience! 🌸👐

This workshop series runs every Wednesday from 6:30-9pm. Sign up for our intro session and then join as a member to get more time to create your pottery masterpieces and continue practicing!

Nest session:

  • September 3rd-24th from 6:30-9pm

It’s a small group experience, only 6 participants, ensuring a cozy, hands-on environment and is great for anyone interested in learning more about clay. With personalized guidance from our expert instructors, you’ll explore the possibilities of clay and discover just how rewarding and meditative handbuilding can be.

What You’ll Learn:

Across 4 weeks, you’ll master foundational handbuilding techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab building, and create unique pieces to take home and cherish. Expect to craft a mix of bowls, mugs, planters, and even some decorative or sculptural pieces, all while gaining confidence to continue exploring pottery independently.

Weekly Adventures in Clay:

  • Week 1: Create your first masterpiece—a hand-pinched bowl—and experiment with coil building to make multiple unique pieces.

  • Week 2: Learn to roll slabs using the studio’s slab roller and design your very own mug with the group. Once you use slabs for the first time, you’ll be hooked! And amazed by all the things you can make.

  • Week 3: Explore creative freedom with templates or freeform techniques to design a project that’s uniquely yours. Add personality with surface designs like textures, carving, or stamping. This is your open project time where your instructor can help you with anything you need.

  • Week 4: Discover the art of glazing and using colored underglazes as you finish your creations with beautiful, food-safe glazes. You’ll have 1 final week to finish glazing all of your pieces.

Course Perks:

  • Small Class Size: Only 6 participants for plenty of one-on-one instruction and support.

  • Open Studio Hours: Practice outside of class during our daily studio hours (11am-7pm) or enjoy full-day access on class days (6am-midnight).

  • Comprehensive Materials: Includes 15 lbs. of your choice of clay (white stoneware or brown speckled buff), all studio glazes, tools, firings, and personal shelf space to store your projects.

  • A Creative Community: Studio Sumi is a warm, welcoming space for makers of all levels. You’ll feel right at home here.

Instructor bio:

Amelia Waliany is an artist and community organizer based in San Francisco, with a creative lineage from New York City and Houston, Texas. A lifelong doodler-with-pen, she was thrilled in 2014 to discover clay as a new artistic medium, energized by the playfulness inherent in the spatial, physical, and tactile aspects of the material. Deeply resonating with the therapeutic, meditative flow-state that is brought on by the process of making with one’s hands, Amelia has since honed her ceramics practice in several studio settings and collectives, along the way absorbing a wide variety of techniques, materials, and themes alongside a vibrant global community of inspiring makers. A people-person to her core, Amelia loves sharing her passion for clay to help others find their creative spark.
